Stretch marks are caused by overstretching of the layer of the skin known as the dermis which results in permanent alteration of its collagen network. This usually occurs during periods of weight gain and in pregnancy. Stretch marks can also develop after using/abusing steroid creams. Using anabolic steroid can also cause stretch marks.
Stretch marks usually develop on the thighs, abdomen, arms, glutes and breasts. Most skincare products are not able to penetrate to the dermis and thus they are associated with unsatisfactory results when used for stretch marks treatment.
However, microneedling is able to penetrate to the dermis.

What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure which uses a device with micro-needles that makes micro-punctures in the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing process which is followed by a proliferation stage in which collagen and elastin are produced.
The final stage is the remodeling stage in which the new tissue matures in the stretch marks area resulting in smoother and firmer skin with less visible stretch marks.
These results begin to be apparent after 2 to 4 sessions and the full effects are seen 6 months after the final microneedling session because it takes time to build new collagen.
Studies have shown that microneedling is effective treatment for stretch marks in persons with light and dark skin tones.
Microneedling for Stretch Marks Treatment Procedure
The procedure begins with applying numbing cream to numb the area.
Blood is then drawn from the person and spun in a centrifuge to obtain PRP. PRP stands for platelet rich plasma and it contains growth factors which further boost collagen production.
Once the numbing takes effect, the area is cleaned and microneedling begins with the device. The dermis is 0.6 to 4mm thick and the microneedles are adjusted accordingly.
The microneedling device is moved over the affected area several times and PRP is applied.
The whole procedure takes about 1 hour and is followed by minimal downtime.
