What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure which uses a device with small needles. These small needles prick the skin and cause controlled micro-injuries at 1.5 to 2.5mm. This stimulates a mild inflammatory response in the skin. Growth factors are released and they encourage the migration of melanocytes to the vitiligo area and stimulate melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. The result is that the vitiligo begins to heal due to the repigmentation.

Microneedling is also beneficial for vitiligo because it creates microchannels in the skin that allow the vitiligo medications to penetrate better and increased their absorption.

Microneedling For Vitiligo Procedure

The Microneedling for Vitiligo procedure begins with the application of a numbing cream to the skin. This is followed by a waiting period for the numbing effect to take place.

The microneedling device is then used to make small pricks in the skin. This is followed by the application of treatment medication like Tacrolimus 0.1% or Pimecrolimus 1% or 5-Fluoruracil (50mg/ml).

The entire procedure takes 1 to 2 hours. There is no downtime after microneedling and the skin usually returns to normal in 1 to 2 days.

Microneedling for Vitiligo side effects include redness, swelling, and mild pain which usually resolve in a few days.

It is important to note that Microneedling for Vitiligo is done on the affected skin and 1 cm beyond the vitiliginous lesion to offer melanocyte recruitment for the repigmentation process.

Microneedling for Vitiligo treatment can be combined with the use of vitiligo treatment creams like betamethasone and calcipotriol as well as with phototherapy.
