Skincare products with dihydroxyacetone like St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse can also be used since they “tan without the sun”. Micropigmentation or medical tattooing can also be done.
Prescription Medications for Vitiligo Treatment
Prescription medications used for vitiligo treatment include corticosteroid creams and tablets.
Antineoplastic agents used to treat vitiligo include methotrexate and ciclosporin.
Psolarens like Trioxsalen (Lucoderm) are also used to treat vitiligo. Trioxsalen (Lucoderm) tablets are given to adults and children over 12 years age at 20-40mg taken 2-4 hours before exposure to UVA from sunlight or UV lamps and this is done 2 to 3 times a week. Lucoderm cream is applied twice daily before exposure to morning sunlight.
Other systemic medications used to treat vitiligo include mycophenolate mofetil and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors like Tofacitinib. Topical 2% Tofacitinib is applied twice daily and combined with phototherapy 3 times a week. Topical Tofacitinib is used for pediatric and adolescent patients with vitiligo. Before starting on JAK inhibitors the following baseline test should be done: CBC, LFT, UEC, lipid profile and screening for tuberculosis and hepatitis.
Dermatology Procedures for Vitiligo Treatment
Dermatology procedures used for vitiligo treatment include phototherapy and microneedling.
Phototherapy is the use of ultraviolet (UV) radiation for treatment. Narrowband UVB, broadband UVB, photochemotherapy and home phototherapy are the forms used to treat vitiligo.
At Almasi Skincare we also offer Microneedling for Vitiligo. This treatment is for patients with stable vitiligo which has not responded to the use of vitiligo medications like steroid creams, steroid tablets, tacrolimus, pimecrolimus and ruxolitinib.
Studies have shown that microneedling is effective for treating vitiligo. Other studies have shown that combining microneedling with these vitiligo treatment medications is more effective that treating vitiligo with the medications alone.
