How to Prepare for a Chemical Peel in Nairobi Kenya

The preparation for a chemical peel begins when you discuss the process with our Doctor and it involves the following:

* Ensuring you are a right candidate

Our doctor will review your medical history and inquire about the medications you are taking as well as any dermatological procedures you have had recently to make sure that you can have a chemical peel.

Persons with a personal or family history of keloids should avoid chemical peels. Those who have been on isotretinoin in the past 6 months should also not get chemical peels.  Ladies who are pregnant should wait until they deliver before having the procedure. Persons with frequent outbreaks of cold sores should consider taking some antivirals before the procedure.

* Choosing the right chemical peel

Our doctor will then examine your skin to determine the type of peel that is the best for you. The choice of the chemical peel depends on your skin type, the conditions being treated, your skincare habits and the medications you are using.

* Scheduling your activities

Schedule your activities to create time to recover. During this time the face may peel which may for 1 to 3 weeks depending on the strength of the peelThis is not required for all chemical peels as some do not have a down time

* Understanding the after-care instructions

These after chemical peel instruction depend on the level of the peel you are having and they might include using a gentle cleanser and hydrating moisturizer with religious sunscreen application. In addition, avoiding the sun and sleeping on your back and not using hot water on your face are other things you may be advised to do.

Preparing your Skin for a Chemical Peel

Preparing your skin for a chemical peel is very important and it involves the following:

*Do not exfoliate

Do not exfoliate your face for at least 1 week before the procedure because having a chemical peel is in essence doing in-depth exfoliation. Therefore steer clear from all physical exfoliants like face scrubs as well as chemical exfoliants.

*Do not epilate

Do not epilate by using electrolysis or depilatories as this can affect the results of the peel. In addition do not shave the areas to be treated before the procedure.

* Avoid sun exposure

Avoid spending too much time in the sun because the best results are achieved on skin that is not sun damaged. This is due to the fact that permanent irregular pigmentation can develop in areas that have had too much sun exposure. If you must go outside apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 and wear a wide brimmed hat.

* Avoid makeup

Avoid using makeup for at least a few days before the chemical peel.

* Drink water

Ensure that your skin is very well hydrated on the day of the chemical peel by drinking copious amounts of water for several days prior to the procedure. In addition, avoid skincare products that dry out your skin for a few days before the peel.
