What Are Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia Symptoms?
Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia symptoms include a band of hair loss along the front and sides of the scalp which results in receding of the frontal hairline. The skin on the affected hairless areas does not have visible hair follicle openings and it is typically lighter than the skin on the forehead which has more sun damage.
There is also eyebrow thinning or loss (madarosis) which usually precedes the scalp hair loss.
The hair loss can extend to the entire body including the limbs. Men can develop loss of the beard and sideburns.
Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss) and traction alopecia are often associated with frontal fibrosing alopecia.

A diagnosis of frontal fibrosing alopecia is made when an individual has 2 major criteria or 1 major and 2 minor criteria.
Major criteria:
*Scarring hair loss of the frontal, frontotemporal or temporal scalp without follicular keratotic papules on the body
*Scarring loss of eyebrows
Minor criteria:
*Redness and scale around hair follicles or solitary “lonely” hairs
*Characteristic histology on skin biopsy which is identical to that of lichen planopilaris
*Similar clinical signs involving other body sites
*Noninflammatory facial papules
*Itch or pain preceding or concurrently at sites of involvement
A skin biopsy is done to assist in making the diagnosis.
Blood tests that can be done include full hemogram, liver function tests, kidney function tests, thyroid function tests and ANA.
